Preparations and Projects

Almost three months since my last post, and things have progressed, regressed, halted and accelerated! Firstly, my long mulled over return to novel writing has begun. I’m about one third of the way through a third, and hopefully, finally, worthwhile manuscript. The story spans three generations, from a Polish artisan living in 1860′s Krakow, to a tent fighter living in Eastern Australia, to a musician who becomes entangled in the French underground during World War Two. My patience and discipline for writing seems to improve incrementally as the years wear on, but I still find it quite painful [but then sadistically satisfying] to re-comb passages over and over, until all their weaknesses are stripped. I try to force myself to ‘wield Ockham’s razor’ so to speak in my first drafts of sections, but it is awfully difficult at times.

In musical news, Winter People have settled in with a manager, a girl called Jaclyn Hurst, which has been a fantastic un-shouldering of burden for me, and we have some big shows lined up. Meanwhile, I Like Cats, just as I choose to go overseas have landed some big gigs themselves, one with Bridezilla, the Scare and Philadelphia Grand Jury, and another potential slot at the Sydney Big Day Out. Rather upsetting I won’t be around to play them, but hopefully a herald of good things to come. Also, Scott Horscroft who has mixed the Presets, and Silverchair among others, is going to be mixing our debut album. So more fingers crossed that it turns out excellent.

My visual efforts have been ground to almost a complete stop for the past (nearly) nine months. When/if I finish the novel manuscript, I have plans brewing for a themed series of oil paintings… I won’t jinx such vague plans with discussion at this point.

Finally, I suppose I should mention my going away. Current itinerary, is London, then Edinburgh, then Denmark, then Paris, then Undecided? – I’m going to purchase a cheap net-book for my travels, and hopefully finish my novel writing over the three months of the trip, although on reflection of the timeframe I will probably only get through perhaps two thirds of the story.

Alright, I believe that generally summarizes my creative activities to date. Until next time, remember, in the presence of grizzly bears, freeze and play dead, and in the presence of those professing ‘all the answers’, do the same.

Little Victories, Big Battles

First note off the rank, the Winter People have won the Annanadale’s Jager Uprising competition. We scored a $10,000 cash prize, so much rejoicing for that. I’m also in the midst of laying down tracks for our second EP. Drums have been tracked at Studio 301 a very high-end studio in Sydney, but as with the Dog Years EP, we’re recording everything else in my bedroom. Aside from recording, Winter People also have quite a number of shows lined up from September – November. One show in particular I’m a bit excited about, is at an underground venue (think 1930′s jazz cellar) – where I get to play a REAL piano. We’ve also been talking with a number of management agencies, but haven’t made up our minds yet about who we’re going to go with. Oh, and we’re also in pre-production meetings about having a film clip made for The Banker’s Lament – more on this as it unfolds.

The other major development of late, is that I am heading overseas at the end of the year. This is something of a big deal for me, since I’ve been putting traveling off for a few years now. My current plan is to leave early December and base myself in London with my brother, and then venture from there to stay with some friends who will be living in Denmark, France and Scotland. Riversend might get its first international blog posts!

Otherwise, the university semester has started again (ugh), its a major-time-suck-hole and has made the recording schedule blow out by a few weeks. I Like Cats is still going strong, though all the waiting around for the album to get mixed/mastered is a little frustrating. Speaking of I Like Cats, we played a show at Oxford Art Factory last Thursday and something caught on fire mid-set! We kept playing though, despite a few alarmed screams – perhaps my first, genuine rock’n'roll moment.

Alright, I must leave it there, going to a film. Salut.

On The Road [?]

I’ve built a Winter People website: http://www.winterpeople.com.au. Basically a very nice link to the Dog Years EP. We’re also in the Jager Uprising Finals at The Annandale, which has a $10,000 first prize. So fingers crossed for that and we’ve got “My Town“> on rotation at FBi radio. So smooth sailing currently. I Like Cats finished recording at Big Jesus Burger, and now we wait for the raw tracks to be mixed/mastered (not sure on the ETA for release). Its a huge relief not to be at the mixing helm! Though I will be putting my mix hat back on in a few weeks because Winter People are going to record a 2nd EP. And final note on the music-technical front – I ordered a Coles 4040 yesterday! I’m hoping its warm ribbon tones will complement and smooth out the glassiness of my condensers. Lunchbox and Great River Pre next up.

Also, perhaps my most major thought of recent times, I think I’m going to take my first overseas trip at the end of this year. I’m twenty-two now and I suppose that’s relatively late in one’s youth to get foot loose. I’ve always felt tied down to Sydney because of various continuing musical and artistic projects. I’ve been hesitant to sabotage their possibilities by leaving. But the Winter People and I Like Cats will both be on hiatus in a few weeks and I will be finishing university at the end of the year. So I think its a perfect time to go. My plan at this point is to travel by myself, but stay/visit with various friends in various countries. Currently I have confirmed friendlies in London, Paris and Scotland. More updates on this as plans unfold.

Finally, with my month off from Uni (in between recording/mixing the 2nd Winter People EP) I’m hoping to record an album of piano songs, if time permits. Also quite a few new sketches to update the site with AND I think I may dive into a redesign of Riversend again. Which will make Version Nine if you can believe it. Seven years of Riversend. Seven Years! Anyway, farewell. Till next time.

All Engines Burning

The Winter People EP is finally done. Overall, I am quite happy with the final product. Certainly, its a step up in professionalism from The Life and Times, but I am a little ambivalent about the results of the mastering process. The mastering compression I thought sounded good and certainly added a nice analogue flavor to the sound, but there was some additive EQ done which I felt made the bass guitar far too prominent in the mix. However, the upside of this, is that I now have quite an explicit set of instructions to give any future mastering engineers regarding the sound I’m after. One of the songs from the EP, ‘My Town’, got added to the MySpace Australia page, which will hopefully garner some listens from around the home-island.

In other music-recording news, I Like Cats are going into Big Jesus Burger studios next week to record an album. Pretty exciting. A little nerve racking.

My show schedule has also picked up, with the Winter People playing a (sold out!) show at The Van Guard on Wednesday night, and then I Like Cats at Club 77 Thursday night, and again on Sunday at the Annandale.

My gear desires have been moderated by reason. Sortof. After splashing out on a Royer 121 Ribbon, I’m going to start up a API lunchbox collection, first preamp on my list is the Great River, then the API 512c, then a Purple Audio Biz. I think that will give me quite a palette, between my mics and preamps.

Anyways, in art news, still a few sketches straggling out here and there, will upload the new ones soon. I am keen to dedicate some time to painting, come Uni holidays – still have the Train Station idea bubbling away. I just need to collect portraits.

Oh, and I’ve got about five piano songs of a similar vein that I want to record as a little EP. This will also probably have to wait until the University Holidays.

Alright, till next time, safe travels.

All Updated on the Eastern Front

Much to report. After a very long gestation period, the Winter People EP is finally approached completion. I went through a very long period of struggle with the mixing. For about three weeks I was at a dead end, in which I repeatedly scrapped all my EQcompression etc. and started over. However, after some serious brain-workouts, I got the mixes into a form that I am happy with. I’m currently on an Easter break from university so I’m hoping to get everything recorded and mixed by the ended of the week and ship it off to a mastering house.

In other music news, I Like Cats has a week booked at Big Jesus Burger studios to record a full length album. One up on that, its free! The recording is being paid for by a manager type fellow (more on this, when I find out more!). I Like Cats played our first show, since the others got back from overseas, at The Oxford Art factory about two weeks ago. Although the on-stage sound took a little while to get right, we were flowing quite well by the end of the set.

My audio gear lust increases. I’m torn at the moment about whether to invest in an API 2500 compressor or a good outboard EQ. Though I’m leaning towards the API 2500 at the moment. I also want to add another mic to the collection, I’m thinking a Neuman U87 or a Soundelux U99 (but that of course necessitates a new preamp as well!) – expensive hobby this.

Also, more ideas for a second (hopefully non-failing) novel have been floating about. A life-story of a sort of mechanical savante who is co-opted by a confidence man to mischievous ends. I think I may get started in the university holidays.

I’ve also been sketching/planning for a painting I’d like to do: a long, long canvas, of an interior train carriage (underground, not above). So I could do about nine profile portraits of all the various types riding the subway together: grizzly vagrants, consumed businessmen, bored teenagers, sleeping tourists etc. I would execute the portraits with a dramatic chiaroscuro, with the blackness of the tunnel and the overhead fluorescent-lights really carving out the bone structures of the figures.

Anyways, there’s a brief update of creative news (I have been a little lax on my blogging lately). Will return with an epilogue to the Winter People EP soon.

Lost on Tape

So a couple of developments to report, but first the saddest: I recently received the raw drums and bass files to start my recording for the Winter People EP. After spending three or four days recording layers upon layer of electric & acoustic guitars, mandolins, pianos, choral harmonies etc. I opened up my audio workstation to discover that the folder I had been recording into had disappeared… it has not returned. While this was pretty saddening, it had one upshot, in that the new recording were a little more focused and were done with the benefit of the previous three days experimentation. And luckily no-one else had recorded any parts yet – and I kept a backup of the raw drum and bass files (phew!).

Otherwise, the recordings are going along smoothly, albeit slower now. My UA 6176 has not disappointed, everything I run through it sounds subtly better – I’m glad the investment was worthwhile. I have been working alot at The Furnace. 9 hour days, which is pretty extreme for me, but university starts in week and a half, so I will be cutting back on work.

The show at the Hopetoun, with Sherlocks Daughter and Wim went really well. It felt very homely and communal, although I wasn’t hugely happy with our performance. So often when you get invited to support another band, your not that into all the bands that play (and sometime none at all!) so, it was very nice to have organized a show myself, because it meant that we played with acts chosen exclusively because I thought they were good.

Anyways, I must away – so stay behind the yellow line, most of the time, but live dangerously, occasionally.

Just like a Tattoo

I recently acquired my very first piece of (decent) outboard audio hardware, a Universal Audio 6176, which is a 610 Preamp and a 1176 compressor in a single unit. Unfortunately I’ve been so busy with Winter People band rehearsals lately I haven’t had a chance to properly acquainted with it. But after our show on the 4th of February, we’re going to track all the vocalsguitarsviolinsorgans through it, so it’ll get a serious work out. From my brief experiments with it so far, I am experiencing the ‘Tattoo Effect’ – I suddenly have an insatiable desire for more, more, more!

My other band mates, from I Like Cats, returned to the country a few days ago. The guitarist and drummer are intending to start an independent record label here in Sydney. Now I know talk is a dirt cheap commodity, but from most of the stories I hear about successful indie labels, they all start off as a couple of music die-hards with no business knowledge whatsoever.

Summer has properly arrived in Sydney, with a two week stretch of scorchers. There have also been a rash of shark sightings along the coast-line, as well as a few actual attacks. Makes me a little nervous when I’m swimming in the ocean now.

Anyways, I have some overseas family visiting here currently so I must go, till next time: when in doubt – apply sunscreen.
